when i posted on mantidforum, i did completely sympathise with people saying "use the search". while it might seem like an off-ish reply to a newbie, it's also frustrating spending time and effort answering someones question or giving advice, only to have the same question asked a few days later, and a few days after that. it got to the point where i couldve sworn there was a handful of questions i (and others) had answered numerous times before, and were still being asked on an almost weekly basis.
i appreciate not every problem or question has been asked word-for-word before, but 80% of the queries could be sorted out with a quick search, a read-through of a handful of related threads, and some common sense. too many people take the easy way out and just post a question before making the effort to investigate for themselves. i did always try to say "here are some links you may find useful" instead of "use the search" but theres only so many times you can give people the benefit of the doubt. however i do admit it can be hard finding what you need there considering its been up for years and so had amassed a wealth of useful info (and even more dross).
i will say though, trying to remain a thoughtful, informative, helpful poster there was almost equal to

EDIT: to answer the question, i was invited by andie
