I don't think its illegal unless the country in question has any specific export laws or the creature in question is protected.
It would be unfair to post nymphs or adults but ootheca would post easily and safely send me some and we'll see

You don't see them captive bred yet because the right people didn't get them yet.
By the way, W-Malaysia allows the export of live and dead insect stock (as demonstrated by all the dealers), E-Malaysia (Sarawak, Sabah) does not. What a coincidence that most logging occures on Borneo... Unfortunately, E-Malaysia was degraded to mere timber and oil palm land. If they just were as busy with conservation issues... Indonesia is even worse. If you have some bucks go visiting it now because most of it will not last for very long.

Import fees are more an issue for commercial dealers. With insects (or animals in general) it's more endangered (CITES) and potential pest or dangerous (poisonous) organisms that must have a permit. But this depends of the respective country, I don't know the UK laws.
