Default Heirodula Membranacea breeding diary.

hiya people i am hoping to breed my h. membs tomorrow and i just want to touch up on what to do, this is what im hoping to do:

1) get male out and let him settle for about 5-10 mins
2) then get female out and place her infront.
3) blow her to make her move a bit
4)hopefully he will jump on then i put them in a tank and let them do the bizz.

tell me if ive missed anything or doing something wrong!!

Alex

I would be inclinded to leave them to it and not disturb them, think how you would like to be disturbed

I would put him in the tank on his own for a day
put her in the tank
cross fingers and leave them to it

I used to do it the way you suggest Alex but it's all a little tricky and rushed, trying to get them into a tank while he's on her back so now I do it the way Craig has suggested.

I have a large 6ft plant that I leave pairs of mantids on overnight sometimes. The next morning the female is usually easy to find but the male takes some hunting around the room.

get him settled in a position you can safely leave him/them in ? (curtains, big plant, net cage etc) put the female down near to him but just out of reach of him then offer her a large prey item, some thing that will keep her occupied for a while. The taking of the prey item and subsequent movements of her over powering and eating it will alert him to her presence, this should be all you need and you may well find he switches straight over to mating behaviour and flying leaps straight on to her back where they can be left alone to get on with it.
If nothing happens then maybe you can settle him on your finger (not always easy when he's been disturbed) when settled touch his antenna to her carefully he should instantly recognise her and leap onto her from there, if not give it a few days and try again
