Default Breeding

Hi all

Just a quick note with a suggestion.

How about we have an oothecae exchange between breeders? I know it kind of happens but I mean directly rather than through a third party and FREE.

This will entail us listing what we are actually breeding not just the species we are keeping.

This way we can make sure we have multiple breeders of the same species which means we should avoid losing species from culture in the event of only one keeper breeding them and gets a problem. We could even get volunteers to take on a species and we can keep a list of who has the 'holding' stock.

Just an idea, give me your thoughts

Regards

Graham

Sounds like a good plan graham and it could be added to the "your species in cultivation" section with a sticky list of breeders and species.

I Have traded ooths before, unfortunately the one i received had already hatched! *cheek* Puts me off doing it again tbh...
So a lot of trust is needed for to do this.

Hi,
Its not just about trading ooths its about keeping species in culture, you must trust the person your gonna trade with to keep the nymphs or pass them on to others who will want to breed that species rather than sell them.
An example is gongys, loads about a.t.m but will there in 1-2yrs time? so many about that people wont want to carry on breeding them if they cant sell them and so on,
Norman.

I would be willing to trade but only with people that i know or that one of the mods can vouch for if it means more species will be kept in culture so we don't need to resort to taking too many ooths from the wild.

Well I think it's a great idea, and has been in the planning for a while now.

I understand some of your concerns about other's who may not be trusted or out for financial gain but members of the "breeding group" will be vetted before hand to try which will hopefully discourage some who may not be in it for the continuation of species in culture and those with no experience in breeding.
The Breeding Group section will be hidden from non-group members.

As Graham states the exchange of ootheca will involve no money changing hands. The whole purpose is not relying on only one breeding having a certain species at a given time but a number of breeders keeping the culture going, if they feel they would like to give up the species they are "holding" then the stock would be passed onto another member to help continue the culture.

The breeders willing participate the better, a number of you already have access (although there's not much to see yet).

Well I think it`s a really good idea! Most of us are hobbyists and probably like to change species from time to time. It`s bloody hard work raising them from ooth to mating and the best plans can go pear shaped through personal circumstances and events. Not having a particular species` `eggs in one basket`, as it were, would help keep some in culture. I`m passing on some pairs of mine to breeders (f.o.c) for exactly that reason.
